A quick look at my monthly archive summary shows that I’ve done less and less blog posting over the last few months. For that I apologise !
Following on from my last blog though, I thought about why I’ve been less active of late in blogs, on twitter etc.
Is it too much work ? more time spent with family etc ? No, not really.. I think I’ve got a good balance there.
What seems to be taking up remaining time right now is that I haven’t learned to say “no” to appointments to committees, boards etc. A quick look at my diary notes no fewer than 6 such meetings in a four day period, with meeting times ranging from 7:30am on one day to 8pm on another day.
I don’t in any way regret time spent on volunteering in this way, and in fact not only is it very important to me to do this to help my community, but I also gain from the mental stimulation and challenges that often come from becoming involved in such a disparate range of activities, causes and concerns.
The thing is.. balance.
Excluding the less active committees and boards, I am currently involved in 8 bodies that are active (meeting at least monthly, with emails and subgroup work ongoing). I think I’m overloaded… and the thing that has to give is the mental energy I have remaining right now for staying fully engaged in our virtual world of online marketers / analysts /creatives / strategists…. and I miss it.
Sometimes the best thing to do is say no… if saying yes too much puts things out of equilibrium

Interesting thoughts, Tom. As much as I like balance, I think the concept of “blending” your passions is even better. Have you seen some of Keith Ferrazzi’s writings on this?
I don’t have this mastered by any stretch, but I’m trying to implement it more and more into my life. The results have been very fulfilling so far…
