What business are you in, 140 chars or less

by Tom McCallum on April 19, 2010

My friend Michelle Rodger ( @tartancat ) blogged on this today. Michelle is a communications specialist and always reminding everyone to be concise, so it got me thinking about a few things to describe in 140 characters or less.

Please add your own 140 char or less quotes on your business / your passions in the comments.

Now, what business am I in ?

My twitter profile says something like :

“I help clients make their business ROCK!” 40 chars

For more detail, how about :

“I add value to clients by helping them find solutions unique to their needs. My method is to combine gut feel and analysis of hard data.” 136 chars

And a thought on how I feel about the consulting business in general ? :

“Consulting should be more about process than implementation. More teach the client to fish than feed them fish.” 111 chars

Last, a thought about life:work.. and passion ! :

“If you’re passionate about your business, make sure the people you hire to help you with it are passionate about what they do too!” 132chars

Love that my blog inspired you, that’s what it’s all about.

Thank you, Tom.

I love this, Tom. Being able to quickly summarize your mission is something I’ve thought a lot about over the past few days. It still needs some work, but right now I would say it is:

“Helping hotels create great travel experiences for their guests using the best new technology” (93 chars!)

I even made a little video explaining how I arrived at this:

Cheers!

Hi Josiah, hadn’t checked your blog of late, so didn’t see your video… I’m not a fan of calling it a mission.. but I do like this idea of stating what you do concisely… as to your own plans… my one input.. you noted a focus on 25-35 year olds due to the tech-savvy tech-focussed side of your areas of focus.. I’d say don’t limit yourself by age.. age is, increasingly, far less well correlated to use of the most up to date technology and web / IT resources.

Great point, Tom – and even beyond age, there is a difference in tech adoption by country/region.

It’s probably better to focus on psychographics, not demographics.

Thanks for the insight
