The future of work – and “Tomorrow’s Tourist”

by Tom McCallum on September 24, 2009

What is the future of employment, and how does that impact who/where/when/how you choose to seek outside consulting/advice ? :

- 10 years ago when one reviewed a CV/ Resume, you looked to see if anyone changed jobs too often (weren’t they good enough to stay in one job ?)

- Today, you look to see if someone stays in a job too long (why did they stay there, didn’t they have better opportunities?)

- Look a short distance into the future and one has to wonder how many people will have no fixed job, but simply be a resource for hire.

That future is now in some industries and areas (take the oil services business in Aberdeen, for example. So many professionals, so many of them spending their whole career on month to month contracts).

All of this is preamble to note that in so many areas, the age of the multinational branded agency/consultancy is dead, we are now moving into the age of networked independent specialists.

A key part of what I do for my clients once I have worked with them to truly know their business and help them find solutions to their unique needs, is to recommend / liaise with networked resources to help them with their specific needs.

One such person who I wish to highlight today is Dr Ian Yeoman. Ian is, as yet, relatively little known in the global tourism industry, but in the years I have known him I have never failed to be impressed by his work. For several years he has been, and remains, the only Tourism Futurist. An academic at heart, he produces work using scientific methods but presents it in a highly accessible way.

So, this one is just to stimulate the synapses…. I recommend you take the time to visit his site, Tomorrow’s Tourist. Well worth the time.
